Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) all stopped at the quarter-finals. In 2022 Morocco beat Spain on penalties in the round of 16 and Portugal 1–0 in the quarter-final to become the first African (and first Arab) nation to reach the semi-final, where France ended the run 2–0.
